Luis Baez, Houston criminal defense attorney and former Felony Prosecutor

When you step into court you don't want to be alone. You need someone who's been there and done that.

Prosecutors know if your lawyer is afraid of going to trial — so we prepare every case to be trial-ready from day one. That approach is exactly what gets the best result during negotiations with the government.

I was born and raised in Houston, and helping people navigate the criminal justice system is what I do every day. As Trial Bureau Chief I get to see our clients' faces when we deliver a second chance and restore a vision for their future. We're ready for whatever comes — inside the courtroom and out.

A Former Prosecutor Who Actually Tries Cases

Luis Baez served as a Felony Prosecutor before joining the defense, and that experience shapes everything about how he works a case. He knows how the State decides which cases to push and which to fold, and he knows that prosecutors can tell when a defense lawyer is afraid of the courtroom. Luis is not. As Trial Bureau Chief, he prepares every case as if it is going to a jury — because that readiness is precisely what produces the strongest position in negotiations, and the best outcomes when a case does go to trial.

Born and Raised in Houston

Luis is a Houston native, and defending people in his own community is personal to him. He understands the local courts, the people who work in them, and the weight a criminal charge places on a family. Whether the case is a DWI, an assault, a theft, or a drug charge, his goal is the same: a second chance and a restored vision of the future for the person sitting across from him.

Trained on the Vehicular Crimes Team

Luis was selected to the elite Vehicular Crimes Team, the unit that handles the most serious intoxicated-driving cases — those involving serious bodily injury or death. He worked Intoxication Assault and Intoxication Manslaughter cases from the investigation forward and understands how blood and breath evidence is gathered, tested, and presented to a jury. He even wrote for The Texas Prosecutor on countering defense attacks on the NHTSA field-sobriety manual — the very playbook he now uses on your side.

A Scholar of the Law

Luis is a published legal author whose work has appeared in law reviews and journals across the country, covering topics from the Lautenberg Amendment and prosecutorial discretion to higher-education policy and consumer protection. That scholarship reflects the way he approaches your case: rigorously, with a command of the law and an eye for the argument that others miss.
